Biodegradable 'PLA' BIOPLASTIC bottles

Nowadays "eco-friendly" plastic bottles are not only based on environmental concerns but it's a trend now following the behavior of consumers. According to a recent survey in 2019 by Globalwebindex, consumers in the US & UK, are willing to pay more for eco-friendly packaging has increased from 47% to 59% in just seven years.

Now eco-friendly packaging falls into three types: Biodegradable Bioplastic, Recycled Plastic and Biodegradable Plastics. This article will help define the difference between these three eco-friendly packaging solutions and clarify what we sell and what we don't.

WE SELL

  • Biodegradable Bioplastic Bottles made from natural materials such as corn, sugar cane or wheat straw. We sell this type of material using Polylactide Acid (PLA) Bioplastic which is commonly from a blend of corn and wheat straw.

  • Recycled Plastic Bottles, which are simply plastics made from recycled plastic materials rather than raw petrochemicals. We sell this type of material using Post Consumer Recycle (PCR).

WE DON'T SELL

  • Biodegradable Plastics made from traditional petrochemicals, which are engineered to break down more quickly, examples of these are Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate (PBAT) and Plastic Barrier Laminate (PBL) plastics. We don't sell these type of plastics.

WHAT IS PLA?

Polylactic or polylactide acid (PLA) is a compostable bioplastic made from plant-based resources like corn, sugar cane or wheat straw. Since It's a bioplastic made from plants, it can be composted in an industrial composting sites.

ADVANTAGES OF PLA

  1. Made from renewable resources (corn, wheat straw & sugar cane), from nature and good for nature.

  2. Compostable and disintegrate naturally upon exposure to sunlight, rain and soil for approximately 2 years.

  3. Lower carbon footprint. PLA can save two-thirds of the energy required to make traditional plastics. It can cut greenhouse gas emissions by about a quarter. (source)

DISADVANTAGE OF PLA

  1. Composting of PLA need to rely heavily to consumers to find composting sites. Fortunately, here in NZ, Australia, UK, Europe & US there are plenty of composting sites that can be found easily. And many more composting sites are being opened around the world, as environmental awareness continues to grow.

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO?

The "Our World in Data Organisation" conducted a statistics that suggests, the "packaging industry" was the most dominant industry to use plastics. Included in this category are the cosmetic sector, food, retail, health & wellness, and many more. A staggering 42% percent share from the entire plastic consumption of the world amounting to 146 million tonnes of plastic waste per year. While this figure is alarming, we believe we can do something about it.
